Overview
Dos años después de la aparición de Estudio en escarlata, el primer volumen dedicado a las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes, en 1889, publicó Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) El misterio de Cloomber, una novela de misterio con ribetes fantásticos ambientada en las landas de la desolada costa de Escocia. El general Heatherstone, que había luchado en las guerras de la India de mediados del siglo XIX, hombre huraño y un tanto paranoico, llega a aquellas apartadas tierras para recluirse en un caserón fortificado junto con su familia, a la que no deja ver a nadie; aunque no puede impedir que finalmente sus hijos hagan amistad con un joven vecino, el narrador de la historia. Sólo sabremos lo que aterroriza al viejo general cuanto, en medio de una gigantesca tempestad, tras un naufragio, lleguen a tierra tres misteriosos monjes hindúes que dramática y sorprendentemente precipitarán el final de la novela.
